Q&A

In a dark place, our pupils dilate. A person feels discomfort and loses his night vision if a strong light shines into his eyes suddenly. Photos of dimmer celestial bodies can only be taken with extended exposure. Not only flashlight will not help, it becomes a nuisance.

Red light is less irritating to the eyes. Our pupils remain dilated whenexposed in red light. It helps to preserve our night vision. Therefore, please use a red torch during stargazing. A red torch can be preparedsimply and effectively by wrapping a sheet of red cellophane, cloth oreven a plastic bag over an ordinary torch.

It is usually dark around the stargazing site. One should be careful in their movements to avoid tripping over telescopes or camera tripods. On the other hand, the photographers should look after their instruments carefully, or consider adding reflective or illuminating marks on the stand to prevent others from accidentally moving it.
