Hakka Culture

Hakka culture refers to the culture created by Hakka people, It encompasses the shared language, various art forms, food culture, folklore, and traditional customs. There are about 80,000 Hakkas in Nantou County, accounting for one-sixth of the county’s population. Many people re-immigrate to Nantou to settle down.

Akun Lemongrass Workshop

Taiwan once had the highest production of lemongrass oil in the world, and the main production area was Guoxing Township, Nantou County. After the 921 earthquake, Liu Chang-kun, a villager, decided to re-enter the lemongrass oil industry in order to revitalize the economy of his hometown and established the “Akun Lemongrass Workshop.” Although it is difficult to promote lemongrass oil in the market because of its high price, Liu Chang-kun still insisted on using the traditional method to make natural lemongrass oil.

Shyh Bao Farm

Longnan Natural Lacquer Museum

It took less than 100 years for the natural lacquer industry to flourish in Taiwan, and various manufacturers withdrew from the market or sought to transform. However, out of a sense of mission to give back to their ancestors and preserve the local characteristics, the proprietors of “Lung Nam” established the “Taiwan Natural Lacquer Museum” in 1985, despite the poor business. Today, Longnan has officially changed the name of the museum to “Long Nan Museum of Natural Lacquer Wares” and continues to promote the cultural and industrial value of natural lacquer.

Puli Xiaopu Society Hakka Cultural Park

Located in Nantou’s Puli Township, the Puli Hakka Cultural Park, which has existed since the Qing Dynasty, is home to not only the Pingpu people, but also Hakka and Hailu people who immigrated and settled here. During the Japanese rule, the area was a sugar cane producing area, and since there was railway line in the Puli Sugar Factory, the area was the economic center of six neighboring villages, and still has a strong cultural and historical atmosphere. In addition, the three phases of the project, including the glass suspension bridge, the hiking trail, and the scenic platform, have been completed with subsidies from the Hakka Committee.
